FedEx tracking: numbers, statuses and common problems
FedEx runs express and ground networks in the US and an international express service in many countries. Its tracking is detailed, and its statuses tell you quite precisely where a package is.
Where to find the tracking number
- In the shipping confirmation email from the shop.
- On the shipping label or the receipt from a FedEx location.
- In delivery notifications from FedEx, if the sender gave it your email or phone.
What FedEx numbers look like
FedEx tracking numbers are commonly 12 digits long; some ground services use 15 digits, and a few services use longer barcodes. Numbers of these lengths also fit other carriers, so a tracker may ask you to confirm that the package is with FedEx. See tracking number formats.
Common statuses
- Label created: the shipper made a label; FedEx doesn't have the package yet.
- Picked up: FedEx has collected or received the shipment.
- In transit, Departed / Arrived at FedEx location: moving through the network.
- At local FedEx facility: at the station that delivers to your area.
- On FedEx vehicle for delivery: out for delivery today.
- Delivered: usually with the place it was left or who signed for it.
- Delivery exception: the delivery was interrupted, for example by an address issue, weather, a closed business or a missing signature.
- Clearance delay: an international shipment is waiting at customs, often for documents, information or a payment.
Typical problems
- International clearance: when information or import charges are needed, FedEx may contact the receiver before delivery. Check any payment request on fedex.com, typed in yourself, since fake "customs fee" messages are common. More on the steps after arrival in arrived at destination country.
- Exceptions: how long they take depends on the cause; if the event asks for an action, such as a corrected address, the sooner you respond, the sooner it moves.
- Long gaps between scans on economy services; see tracking not updating.
For claims, redelivery, customs payments and anything about your account, use FedEx's own website: fedex.com. Trackful is an independent package tracker and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by FedEx; the FedEx name is used only to identify the carrier.
